MEATY CLUCKERS

Detailing the journey and Great Egg-Spectations of our flock

MEET THE FLOCK

The newest members of the Meaty Cluckers flock! We added 3 additional chicks in spring 2023 – and only 1 ended up being a hen. The other two, A Nice Piece of Fist, and Mrs Gambolini ended up being roosters – and since our town doesn’t allow us to keep roosters, we rehomed them to a sanctuary where they can live our their rooster lives. After the roos were rehomed, Trashley suffered a head wound when we tried to inegrate her into the main flock – so we got 2 more pullets to keep her company.

The two hens to replace the roos are Dame Angela Hensbury and Kim Crawford, barnyard mixes. Dame Angela Hensbury (Ang) suffered a similar headwound before we adopted her, so naturally she was a fit for us.

A step up from Rubbermaid The chicks are quickly outgrowing their current Rubbermaid lodgings, so we spent the last week constructing their next step-up: a 5'x3'x4' cedar box where they can live in our garage for a few weeks. I should have taken more photos during the...

She’s a brick House

House is by far the strangest looking chick we have. She's supposedly a Black Sex Link, but I'm not convinced she's not some weird turkey hybrid. She is significantly larger than the other chicks, and is already perching on things. I'm pretty sure she's older than the...

Chickens. Do they suck? This is the story of two people who decided they didn't clean up enough poop in their lives, and decided to start a little backyard flock of chickens. We went from "considering chickens" to "placed down payment on custom chicken coop and have 6...

Our Foray into Backyard Chickening

Well we finally did it. After visiting and talking to friends who have their own chickens, we decided it was the right t ime to try raising our own backyard chickens. On Sunday, 5/1/22, we picked up 6 chicks from Dodge Grain in Salem, NH. They didn't have the breeds...
